How to check if a car is taxed

Since the paper tax disc was scrapped in 2014, there’s nothing in the windscreen to tell you whether a car is taxed. The status lives in the DVLA record instead. What happens if a car isn’t taxed

•The DVLA runs automated number-plate checks and can issue a penalty without the car ever being stopped.
•An untaxed car on a public road can be clamped or impounded, with a release fee on top of the tax owed.
•If the car is kept off the road, you must declare it SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) rather than simply letting the tax lapse.
